Enlarged lymph nodes are a sign of lymphadenopathy, which has many possible causes beyond cancer. The most common reasons are infections and inflammation that provoke reactive enlargement of nodes. Cancer can cause nodes to enlarge, especially with metastasis or lymphoma, but growth of a node does not by itself prove cancer. Many benign conditions produce enlarged nodes, and some cancers may not cause noticeable node changes early on. So an enlarged lymph node does not automatically indicate cancer; it needs careful clinical assessment and, if features are suspicious or the node persists, imaging or biopsy may be warranted. Enlargement isn’t typically a direct sign of liver disease or heart disease.
